"Whoa, y'all look like scientologists"
Good
morning everyone!
Just as some background to the title of this email, the Church of Scientology has like six buildings within our ward boundary (probably because we're in Hollywood and everyone is super weird here. ; ). The ward actually has a number of jokes about it, to be honest. Also, Church Headquarters announced about two weeks ago that Sister Missionaries are now allowed to wear slacks for proselyting. Sister Howard and I got our first pair last P-day, and went out in them on Tuesday. Just for the record, it is soooo nice. Anyway, we were having a combined lesson with the Elders first thing in the morning, and we beat them to the place we were meeting. The first thing the Elders said when they got out of the car and saw us was "Whoa, y'all look like scientologists." So I guess there are both pros and cons to this change. ; )
Scripture/Spiritual Thought:
Studying from the new Come, Follow Me manual this week was so cool! It is so amazing to see the hastening of the work. My favorite quote from the manual this week was, "'What seek ye?' Jesus asked His disciples (John 1:38). You might ask yourself the same question—for what you find in the New Testament this year will greatly depend on what you seek. 'Seek, and ye shall find' is the Savior’s promise (Matthew 7:7). So ask the questions that come to your mind as you study, and then seek diligently for answers." I know that if we have questions, we can ask God. He gives to us liberally, and does not upbraid. The restoration of this Church is proof of that. Our Heavenly Father knows all things, and He loves us very much. He wants us know more about His love for us, so He invites us to seek learning by study and by faith. When we do so, the mysteries of heaven will be revealed to us.

Favorite miracle:
Yurii came to church with his mom yesterday! He is a member who got baptized in Russia right before moving here, and ever since he got here, he hasn't been very active. We were so excited that he decided to come!
Favorite funny thing:
Sometimes for language study, Sister Howard and I go to Plummer Park because a lot of Russian-speakers like to hang out there. We'll either just study at a park bench or Sister Howard will go around talking to old Russians. We were there on Friday, and Sister Howard went over to talk to a couple of guys sitting at a table. They had a couple of water bottles out, as well as some dentist-sized Trader Joe's cups. She started talking to them, and all of the sudden she burst out laughing. It turns out that it wasn't water they'd brought with them: they'd smuggled vodka into the park in water bottles. One of them actually was filled with water to use as a decoy in case they got caught, so they opened it up and gave us some water and kept toasting to our success and our future families. ; ) But the funniest thing about it was when a couple of park security guards walked by and one of the Russian guys just yelled (quite loudly) "Quick, hide the cups!"
Other stuff:
Last weekend, the
missionaries in our ward all fasted to know what to do with the Russian program
moving forward. Even though I don't always understand the Lord's plans, I
trust Him. This is His work, and He knows what He is doing. We are trying
really hard to rely on Him to know what to do, because He is the one that knows
how to help these people.
Love,
Sister Garfield
