I Guess I'm Iron Man Now
Hey
everybody!
This week was so
weird. We just had transfers, and it has been a really weird adjustment to have
pretty much every companionship in the mission as a hybrid between the city and
the valley! My new companion is named Sister Jarvis. She's from Seattle, has been
out for about 14 months, and she's an ASL missionary! She has spent most of her
mission in the ASL branch, so it has been interesting to see how that has
affected her mission. It's really funny; every once in a while she'll just sign
while she talks and she won't even realize it. It has also made backing when
driving really weird because she keeps trying to give me directions through
sign language. ; ) We're figuring it out though. Also, this week we introduced
ourselves to this one guy who said he wouldn't remember our names, so I just
went, "It's easy. I'm Sister Garfield, like the cat, and she's Sister
Jarvis, like in Iron Man." So we have a comic book character
companionship. This is also her first time being an STL, so I've been showing her
the ropes. She's doing a great job. Since we're a team now, I keep thinking
every once in a while that if she's JARVIS, I must be Iron man. That's pretty
freaking sick. ; )
Favorite quote:
President Gordon B
Hinckley said, "Those who have read [the Book of Mormon] prayerfully, be
they rich or poor, learned or unlearned, have grown under its power. ...
Without reservation I promise you that if you will prayerfully read the Book of
Mormon, regardless of how many times you previously have read it, there will
come into your hearts... the Spirit of the Lord. There will come a strengthened
resolution to walk in obedience to his commandments, and there will come a
stronger testimony of the living reality of the Son of God."
I found this in Preach
My Gospel the other day and thought it was really great! The power of the Book
of Mormon is so unfathomable. The fact that this book is written for all of us
and can answer the questions deep within each of hearts is so amazing; it's
almost something you'd hear about in a movie or novel, some magic book that has
the answer to everyone's questions. I love the Book of Mormon so much! We,
weirdly, had a really hard time getting to do personal study this week, and I
really missed getting to read it as much as usual. It was just really interesting
to see how much of a different it made to not get to read the Book of Mormon
each day. I don't want to have that difference anymore! So I'm going to do
everything I can to make sure that I get at least a couple of verses in every
day, even when we're super busy with driving to LA and craziness like that. And
I would invite you guys to do the same. If you're not reading the Book of
Mormon every day, do it!
Favorite miracle:
Our dinner cancelled
one night this week, so we were doing some planning and downloading some stuff
since we had a couple of minutes, when we got a random text from a member who
just moved into the West Hills ward, asking if we had eaten yet. When we were
like "No, how did you know?" he just responded, "I don't know,
the Spirit?" ; ) It was a simple little miracle, but it was just so cool
to see that the Lord takes care of us.
Favorite
Spiritual/Teaching moment:
There is this lady we
got to teach this week who has actually been taught before, but she's had a
really hard time understanding what the Book of Mormon is and why it's
important. Well, we met her last week and saw how much she had opened up, and
we were able to set up an appointment with her for last Thursday. Fast forward
a couple of days, and we got to have an awesome lesson with her about the Book
of Mormon. We shared John 10:16 with her and compared it with the verse in 3
Nephi that talks about how the Nephites are those other sheep. It took her a
second, but then she understood. And she wants to meet with us again!
I love you guys! I
hope you have a super great week!
Love,
Sister Garfield
(She didn't have any picture titles, but at least we got pictures this week!)
