"Give 'em Heaven"
October 26th, 2017
Hi everyone!!
This may have been the craziest week of my life, but it's been so great! With these big emails to everyone, I think I'm going to talk about a few favorites from the week, just because there's so much that there's no way I can talk about everything. We'll see how this goes.
Favorite Quotes/Scriptures:
"God doesn't call the qualified; He qualifies the called."
This was said in one of our very first meetings after getting here, by an Elder in the crowd. I think it's so cool. After having experienced this first week, I know that I am definitely NOT qualified to do this. But with God's help, I can do all that He asks of me.
"God doesn't call kings and queens. He calls displaced princes, and servant girls. Farm boys and fishermen. You are enough."
This was from Sister Porter, the wife of one of the counselors in our branch presidency. She's awesome. It kind of goes with the first quote I shared, but it helped us all to feel like we can do this.
DC 138 - I don't remember the exact verses, but it's in the end of the chapter. I was reading this the other day when studying about the premortal life, and realized for the first time that a few of the verses are talking about us as missionaries. It was awesome.
Also, the quote that was the title for this week was from a Brother Martino, a teacher who sometimes comes to help in our class. I just loved it. It was like, funny and spiritual at the same time, which makes everything great.
Favorite Spiritual Moments:
In our Tuesday devotional this week, we got to hear from Elder Gary E. Stevenson and his wife. That was really cool. He talked about developing Christlike attributes, specifically humility, obedience, virtue, and diligence. You know you're a missionary when you get to hear from a general authority on any given Tuesday night.
Our branch presidency challenged us to all have a companionship goal to focus on from our first Thursday to our first Sunday. My companion and I chose to focus on having being sensitive to the Spirit and having the courage to act on those promptings. It has already blessed us in so many ways. I'm definitely keeping this up.
Our district is amazing in so many ways: we can laugh together, but we are also all there for each other and we always feel the spirit together when we study or are in class. My companion, Sister Smullin, hurt her ankle in our gym time the other day, and the Elders in our district were able to give her a blessing. It was so wonderful to all be there together. I am so grateful for the priesthood.
Favorite Funny Moments:
Maybe it's just a part of adjusting to a new place with new people, but there are sooooo many funny things that happened this week! Here are a few:
Sleep deprivation is real guys. Yesterday in the elevator, we were going down with the other sisters in our room. One of them was looking at the close and open door buttons and goes "Wait, we can go sideways?!?!" It was hilarious. ; )
Our district is awesome. We've gotten into the habit of yelling "Elders!" or "Sisters!" at the top of our lungs when we see each other, especially outside. But remember, this is a new place and we are all still getting used to the whole we're missionaries thing. So, when I was outside studying with Sister Smullin one day and some of the Elders shouted "Sisters!" at us, we only mostly died laughing when Sister Smullin accidentally yelled "Brothers!!!!" at the top of her lungs. What made it even better was that I don't think the Elders even noticed until she shouted a correction right afterwards. ; )
Other Stuff:
My companion, Sister Smullin, went to junior high with me and was in my orchestra class! How crazy is that? The Lord is truly amazing.
You guys are all awesome!
Love,
Sister Jessica Garfield
